Prostate Enlargement

The prostate is a gland found only in the males and its purpose in the body is to produce seminal secretions. The gland consists of fine tunnels that drain seminal fluid into the urethra at the time of ejaculation. The prostate gland become prominent only after puberty and thenceforth it continues to grow under the influence of androgens. Eventually the gland grows to such a size that it starts to obstruct the passage of urine and produces changes in the bladder.



What are the symptoms of prostatic enlargement ?

The disease is first noticed by the presence of symptoms which may include:

  • Dribbling after urination
  • Excessive urination at night
  • Severe urge to urinate
  • Frequent urination
  • Sense of incomplete bladder emptying
  • Leakage of urine
  • Urinary retention
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Weak urinary stream
  • Recurrent infection
  • Sexual dysfunction

These symptoms have been categorized in to storage symptoms which include frequency, urgency and Nocturia and voiding symptoms which include poor stream, straining to pass urine,  and post void symptoms like feeling of incomplete bladder emptying and post void dribbling of urine.
